Temperature loggers worth the money posts 31–51

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1.

post #30 answers the question as asked. The question underneath it is different.

Temperature logging: devices that record temperature over time let you confirm cold chain was maintained. Useful if a shipment was delayed or if you are concerned about excursion.

On post #28 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification.

Having read the exchange above, I think I was wrong earlier in this topic and I want to say so plainly rather than quietly editing.

The correction was fair and I had been repeating something I had not checked carefully enough.

p.novak, post #24: Reconstituted solutions: once reconstituted, solutions are less stable than lyophilised powder. Refrigerate prepared solutions immediately after preparation. Most stability claims assume refrigeration. Go to post

Assessing an excursion: if a package sat at room temperature for a time, visual inspection (cloudiness, discoloration, particles) can alert you to problems. Not visible does not mean not damaged, but visible problems are a reason to contact the supplier.

Thank you for the correction. I have edited my earlier post with a note rather than silently, so the thread still makes sense to read. The error was mine and it was the kind that comes from remembering a figure instead of looking it up.

Worth separating two things that post #32 runs together.

Domestic refrigeration: most lyophilised peptides are stored at 2–8 °C (35–46 °F). That is standard refrigerator temperature. Check your refrigerator's actual temperature; some are warmer than the label.

Shipment during summer or to hot climates: consider shipping to a cold-storage facility rather than to home if temperatures will be high. Alternatively, time shipment to arrive when you can refrigerate immediately.

Shipping container and cold packs: reputable suppliers use insulated containers with cold packs designed to arrive cool. Checking on arrival that cold packs are still cold is a sign the chain was maintained.

Temperature excursions: brief excursions above 8 °C are tolerable for most compounds. Hours to a day at room temperature is usually acceptable. Days to weeks at room temperature risks degradation.

Freeze-thaw: some peptides tolerate freezing; others do not. Check your compound's labelling. Generally, repeated freeze-thaw is worse than single freeze-thaw.

Coming back to post #41, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

f.fontaine, post #19: This follows post #16 rather than contradicting it. I disagree with the reply above, and I think the disagreement is substantive rather than terminological. The distinction being drawn does not survive when you look at the published data for this specific question. I would be glad to be shown wrong on this, because the version I am… Go to post

Practical note that does not fit anywhere else. Whatever you conclude from this topic, write down what you did and when. The single most useful thing in your own records is not any individual result; it is that they are dated and consecutive.

Picking up post #48: that is the part I would want checked first.

Light protection: avoid direct sunlight and UV exposure. Amber vials or opaque containers reduce light exposure. For short-term storage, keeping the vial in its original packaging (often opaque) usually suffices.
